War Memorial
After numerous discussions since 1923, regarding the construction of a shrine or a memorial park, in 1932 the “pro monument” Committee was formed, which entrusted the design of a monument to the engineer Giancarlo Maroni, a friend of Fulvio Balisti and famous for the creation of the Vittoriale di Gardone Riviera, the last home of Gabriele D’Annunzio.
The monument was officially solemnly inaugurated on 20 October 1935, after two years of work, in the presence of the authorities and the population.
The project of the monument was conceived by Maroni as a shrine to be ascended, through a spectacular flight of steps that originates in the center of four powerful arched stone portals, over 6 meters high compared to the level of the square, placed on a stylobate raised by some steps.
The red Verona stone staircase, in its highest part, in front of the circular “Terrazzo della Gloria”, is divided into two symmetrical and enveloping ramps with large cobbled steps, which lead to Via Castello.
On the first large landing, in the center of the staircase, the “Pilo degli Eroi” was created, a monolithic block of stone on which the names of the Fallen are written and from which a flag pole stands out, now made of iron, but which was originally characterized by a grooved travertine element that included a fasces.
On the sides of the building there are two perfectly equal flowerbeds, surrounded by a low, curved stone perimeter wall and an iron protective railing, in the center of which a small Cedar of Lebanon has been planted, today almost 15 meters tall. meters.
On the sides of the second section of the staircase, there is a degrading step characterized by two large Laurel bushes, while on the top of the “Terrazzo della Gloria” and in the green areas, Cypresses have been planted which, together with the other tree species, constitute the Remembrance park.
The complex was restored in 2009.
