Scaligero Castle of Ponti sul Mincio
The Scaliger Castle, built in the period between 1260 and 1276, the year in which it is mentioned for the first time in documents; it was included in the defensive constructions of the Scaligeri Lordship, to defend the territory and to observe the vast valley preceding Lake Garda.
The castrum of Ponti is defined as an “enclosed castle”, with a polygonal and elongated shape and enclosed within five towers, two of which are actual buildings closed by walls, and the other three constituting recesses of the patrol walkway.
Its defensive function having decayed since the 18th century, first the aqueduct reservoir was built (now demolished) and the inside of the wall was used as a vegetable garden and cultivated until recent times.
Today, after careful restoration, the complex appears free of weeds and represents the entrance ticket to Ponti for anyone arriving in the town.
