Plis of Solferino
The Local Park of Supra-municipal Interest of Solferino is located in the center of the morainic amphitheater of lower Garda and extends over an area of 240 hectares. The ecological and landscape importance of the PLIS is given by the role of east-west connection between the Mincio river and the territory of the Municipality of Castiglione delle Stiviere, along one of the main routes of the provincial ecological network. Undulating plains, terraces, hills, woods and peat bogs, arid meadows and vineyards are linked in a particular way with anthropic elements and with places with a strong symbolic character such as the spaces and monuments involved in the historic and tragic battle of 24 June 1859, which gave birth here the idea of the International Red Cross. The PLIS is connected to the neighboring protected areas by a network of routes defined by the hiking map of the green areas of Lombardy through whose itineraries (some mapped by the CAI) it is possible to admire glimpses of extraordinary landscape value. In the Plis there is a widespread presence of erratic boulders transported downstream and deposited when the glacial tongue melted during the retreat phases. This is the case of the “Predù de la Capuna” on the hilly ridge in the Santoline area and of the boulder close to the base of the Red Cross Memorial next to the path that descends towards Pozzo Catena.
