– Castiglione delle Stiviere
Parks and valley area
Inserted in an area of great charm where nature, culture and history intertwine with great harmony, Castiglione delle Stiviere is the beating heart of the Upper Mantua area.
Evocative theater of nature and history, this area, hospitable in every season, offers splendid views with the greenery of the woods and countryside.
In the Castiglione landscape you can also find arid meadows, characterized by poor and dry soil. They are very important from a naturalistic point of view, they represent a perfect habitat for many animal and plant species.
For nature lovers, the Pastore Park, with the adjacent Desenzani Park, represents a large green lung in the heart of the city. Two green areas with paths and play areas that offer the possibility of relaxation, picnics and numerous outdoor activities.
The Castiglione landscape is characterized by a succession of rolling hills and sinuous profiles, in a play of basins and reliefs, a memory of the ancient glacier that deposited its debris here. The landscape is enriched not only by woods and waterways but also by arid meadows and wetlands.
Arid meadows are characterized by poor and dry soil: these factors are very important from a naturalistic point of view because they present an excellent habitat and therefore a great naturalistic biodiversity. Monte Merlo is the perfect example of the arid meadows of Castiglione; significant is the presence of some species of orchids of the Ophrys, Anacamptis, Cephalanthera, Orchis and Platanthera genera, and a notable entomological fauna. The climb rewards you with a breathtaking view.
Although the wetlands constitute a small part of the territory of Castiglione delle Stiviere, they offer immense wealth from an animal and plant point of view. In addition to the many animal species (the rare bittern, the red, white and gray heron, the kingfisher, the coot, the little grebe, the marsh harrier), the numerous plant species should also be noted (the reeds, the sedges, the hygrophilous woods, herbaceous riparian vegetation and the abundant presence of the very rare Viola elatior, commonly called Viola major). The Valle wetland represents an oasis of peace for flora and fauna, and, at the same time, also a small corner of paradise for all nature lovers.
Località Astore
Inserted in the heart of the morainic hills of Castiglione delle Stiviere, the hamlet of Astore is immersed in a characteristic agricultural landscape within which there is another interesting wetland, located immediately north of the hamlet, which flows its waters into the vase Albana, which flows immediately further downstream passing next to the town.
