Museum of the Risorgimento
The Museum of the Risorgimento of Solferino and San Martino is dedicated to the Risorgimento, with particular attention to the finds linked to the battle of Solferino and San Martino (24 June 1859), an armed clash of the Second War of Independence which occurred in several phases and in different locations. The museum has a branch in the nearby town of San Martino della Battaglia, a hamlet of Desenzano del Garda, in the province of Brescia.
The finds preserved in the Solferino museum cover the entire Risorgimento chronologically and can be dated from 1796, the year of Napoleon Bonaparte’s first descent into Italy, to 1870, the year of the capture of Rome.
The Museum was founded in 1931 by the Solferino and San Martino Society, a non-profit organization that was founded in 1870 to give a worthy burial to the fallen of the tragic battle of 24 June 1859; it is largely made up of assets from the Gaudenzio Carlot collection.
