– Lonato del Garda
Località Lazzaretto
The locality takes its name from the fact that, during the period of the seventeenth-century plague, plague victims were brought to this place to be placed in isolation, safeguarding the population of the village, thus establishing a lazaret.
The fountain that can be admired was used for washing and collecting water. It was originally located in Piazza del Municipio and it is said that Napoleon quenched his thirst from it after the battle against the Austrians which took place in 1796. The fountain was moved to its current position in the early twentieth century.
Today the CAI 803 path starts from here which leads to Esenta and subsequently connects to the CAI 805 path which ends in Madonna della Scoperta.
Along the route it is possible to walk through what for a period was the shooting range of Lonato del Garda. Initially located in Filatoio, it was moved to Lazzaretto following the construction of the Castiglione-Desenzano tram railway section (around 1911). Giuseppe Garibaldi also participated in the inauguration of the shooting range in April 1862, witnessing some shooting.
