Famedio

In via Garibaldi there is an octagonal temple, now used as a Famedio (temple of illustrious men) in honor of the fallen of all wars. Originally the church was dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario: it was in fact at the request of the Company of the Most Holy Rosary that Ferdinando I Gonzaga ordered its construction in 1640. The church was deconsecrated at the end of the 18th century and reconsecrated as Famedio in 1922. In the same year the cusp bell tower, which was unsafe after the lightning that struck it in 1903, was demolished, the roof was rebuilt, and the building was raised by a few meters with the overlapping of a newsstand with the statue of Victory on the roof.

“The church was deconsecrated at the end of the 18th century and had become a granary. Upon the death of his two sons, Lawyer Gian Luigi and Engineer Gian Battista Lodrini, which occurred in battle during the First World War, his father, Comm. Antonio promoted a Committee of which he was, in fact, the main financier, to purchase the Church, restore it and donate it to the citizens as Famedio.”

An account of this is given on a plaque placed in the apse of the church itself.
