Church of San Pietro in Vincoli
Solferino Ossuary
The church of San Pietro in Vincoli or Ossuary of Solferino is the first church of Solferino.
It can be reached along an avenue of cypress trees and on the façade there are two mosaics, of San Pietro and of the Redeemer.
The Church of San Pietro in Vincoli was chosen as the Ossuary of Solferino, a place to keep the remains of those fallen during the Battle of Solferino and San Martino. The remains of around seven thousand soldiers are gathered here without distinction, partly exposed in the apse and partly in a deep well beneath it.
Another ossuary dedicated to this battle is in San Martino.
Henry Dunant writes that it took three days and three nights to collect the corpses; Lombard farmers also collaborated.
The entire surrounding area from Lonato del Garda to Desenzano del Garda had become a large hospital. Some of the wounded were sent to Brescia transported on wagons; many died en route.
