Church of San Giovanni Decollato – Castel Venzago
The origins of the church are unknown. It was mentioned for the first time in the pastoral visit of 1595 and in the subsequent 4 other visits which took place between the mid-seventeenth century and the first decade of the eighteenth century. The building is owned by the Parish of Beata Maria Vergine del Rosario in Centenaro.
The gabled façade faces west. At the back of the church is the bell tower.
The interior has a single hall, the main altarpiece dating back to the 18th century depicts the “Beheading of St. John the Baptist”.
The locality of Castel Venzago, with the Church of San Giovanni Decollato, is affected by the route of the Faith and Solidarity route, organized by the Morainic Hills of Garda.
The Path of Faith and Solidarity is designed to learn about the places of birth and life of San Luigi Gonzaga of Castiglione delle Stiviere, Blessed Paola Montaldi of Volta Mantovana and Sant’Angela Merici of Desenzano del Garda. You will discover the scenic and naturalistic beauties of the morainic region, a territory that is extremely important for history and for artistic and cultural settlements. The idea of the Red Cross was born here by virtue of a wonderful combination of popular piety imbued with religiosity and the highest civil feeling, personified by the presence in the territory, in 1859, of its founder Henry Dunant.
