– Lonato del Garda
Basilica of San Giovanni Battista
It is a grandiose baroque building in the shape of a Latin cross. The imposing façade is punctuated by columns and adorned with sculptures depicting (from right to left): Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, San Zeno, Sant’Annone, Santa Barbara. Above the large window is the coat of arms of the Community: a rampant lion with two keys and three lilies.
The refined dome dominates the Basilica and gives it a harmonious upward thrust: it is a typical example of the architectural production of the Lonatese architect Paolo Soratini (1680-1762).
The interior includes thirteen altars, while the main altar is completed by an extraordinary altarpiece completed in 1752 by the Veronese painter Giambettino Cignaroli which depicts the sermon of Saint John the Baptist.
The Resurrection Triptych signed by Bernardino Licinio and dated 1528 is preserved in the Sacristy.
