Church of San Biagio

A church in honor of San Biagio, patron saint of Cavriana, was already inside the ancient castle, but was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century: an eighteenth-century altar in polychrome marble remains, now located in the small oratory of the San Giacomo district. The current parish church of S. Maria Nova, whose altarpiece depicts the patron saint of the village, dates back to 1719. The tradition of celebrating the saint with the blessing of the throat imparted in the church by the priest through two crossed candles and with the preparation of the traditional cake of San Biagio, based on native almond trees, whose fruits were also appreciated and sought after by the Gonzagas. On February 3rd the ancient Fiera di S. Biagio is celebrated in Cavriana, on the occasion of which a maxi cake with a diameter of three meters is prepared.
