– Solferino
Piazza Castello
Piazza Castello of Solferino is one of the most beautiful squares in the province of Mantua: in this area there was an 11th century castle that Orazio Gonzaga transformed into his residence in the 16th century.
Piazza Castello of Solferino is reached by passing under an arch, part of what once was
it was an entrance to the castle with a tower and drawbridge. To delimit the square there are a ring of houses and a part of the walls; the Watchtower and the church of San Nicola in the center remain of the castle. On clear days you can enjoy a view that reaches as far as Lake Garda and various events in the town take place here.
